Most fluffy dog breeds originated in counties with colder climates or harsher winters. Their thicker, fluffy coats protected them while they were outside and exposed to the elements. Larger fluffy dogs were often used for working outside while smaller fluffy dogs were often companions and lap warmers.

Keep in mind that some fluffy dogs can have higher maintenance grooming requirements, often shed a lot, and might have undercoats or double coats that need special attention or clean up. (Note that some are low-shedding and allergy-friendly despite their fluff!)
